Converting existing 2D content (CGI 3D in 2D or Real-Life 2D) to stereoscopic or autostereoscopic viewable formats poses some issues that James Cameron discusses.
Basically, he is saying that if you are converting a 2D video into 3D, you will get the pop-out book effect - unless you go through a very slow, painstaking process. He goes on to say that the best way to achieve true-3D is to film in stereoscopic or to create the CGI 3D with true-3D viewing in mind.
