Toshiba Rumored to Release Autostereoscopic TVs in Japan by End of 2010

It looks like Toshiba is testing the consumer, autostereoscopic TV market in Japan. I'm anxious to see how it works out. I've been creating videos for autostereoscopic displays for about 2 years now and closely following the industry. The technology is truly amazing and definitely attracts people to watch it, but I'm not sure how long people will want to watch it. I've sat on my couch and watched my 42" LCD for hours upon hours - now we're going to find out if people will watch an autostereoscopic TV for that long.

Apple Files Patent for 3D Inside Glasses

Apple has filed a patent to allow viewers to see 3D video from within wearable glasses. Apple fans have nicknamed the glasses "iSpecs".

The glasses could be connected to an iPhone, iPod or iPad and would also include eye sensors to ensure the image was projected to the ideal spot. The glasses would also include an accelerometer so that the user could control things by nods or head movements. There would also be a camera on the glasses so that a small video box (think picture in picture) would show the viewer what's going on in the real world.

I wonder if autostereoscopic monitors could be beneficial in helping scientists from NASA to visualize dark matter, as they have done in 3D? Discovery News reports on how 3D helps them visuaze this matter, as 2D representations just don't cut it.

Nintendo announced the new handheld 3DS will offer a 3D gaming experience. No more details have been released, but speculators think it will either be a faux-3D system, as shown here, or it will be a parallax-based autostereoscopic 3D screen.
